The Mountain West Conference announced its fall All-Academic team today and 16 Utes made the list. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must be starters or significant contributors who have completed at least one academic term while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better.

Leading the way for Utah was senior linebacker Spencer Toone, a second-team Academic All-American, who compiled a team-best 3.85 GPA fall semester while taking graduate courses. He earned a bachelor’s degree in speech communication in May of 2005.

Another graduate student to make the MWC all-academic team was senior center Jesse Boone, who posted a 3.483 GPA in his first semester of MBA school. Boone received his bachelor’s degree last May with a double major in economics and business administration and was named to the ESPN The Magazine academic all-District VIII team.

Joining Toone and Boone on the Academic All-MWC team were: Kyle Brady, Freddie Brown, Casey Evans, Brian Hernandez, Brian Johnson, Travis LaTendresse, Brice McCain, Taylor Miller, Louie Sakoda, Ameen Shaheen, Ryan Smith, Cody Sorensen, Steve Tate and Charlie TeGantvoort.

Utah and Boise State have appeared together in the top 25 several times over the past few years, but now the two Intermountain football powers will meet on the field, starting this fall. Utah will host Boise State in Rice-Eccles Stadium on Sept. 30, 2006, replacing originally-scheduled Ohio. The Utes will return the trip to Boise in 2011 in a home-and-away series that will continue in 2012-13. "We are pleased to have Boise State on our schedule," said Utah Director of Athletics Dr. Chris Hill. "Given where our programs are competitively, as well as geographically, this will be a great game for our fans." Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham agrees. "A series with Boise State makes sense for a lot of reasons. For the last several years they have been very successful and we’re excited to have a quality program like Boise State on our schedule" Both teams have attracted national attention in recent years. Utah is 29-7 since 2003, with two Mountain West Conference championships and three bowl victories. The Utes became the first school from a non-BCS conference to play in a BCS bowl game in 2004–finishing the season 12-0 and beating Pittsburgh in the Fiesta Bowl. Utah also beat Southern Miss in the 2003 Liberty Bowl and Georgia Tech in the 2005 Emerald Bowl. In the last three years, Utah is 8-2 against BCS schools, beating Arizona (twice), Texas A&M, California, Oregon, North Carolina, Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech, while losing to Texas A&M and North Carolina. Boise State is 33-6 since 2003, has won three straight Western Athletic Conference championships (sharing the title in 2005) and played in bowl games each year. Included in that three-year record is a 23-1 mark against WAC schools (1-5 vs. BCS schools). Utah and Boise State have played five times previously, with the Broncos winning three, including the last home-and-away series in 1998 and 1999.
